Tea-baggers? More like douche-baggers
Seriously. What kind of heartless, spineless assholes would heckle a woman who lost her daughter and unborn grandchild? The ugly face of the GOP rump shows it's colors once again.
A group called the Chicago Tea Party Patriots publicly heckled a grieving family and suggested that the couple fabricated their tragic story.
At a town hall held by Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) on Nov. 14,, Dan and Midge Hough spoke about how they believed the death of their daughter-in-law and her unborn child were caused, in part, by a lack of health insurance. Twenty-four-year old Jennifer was uninsured. According to her in-laws, she was not receiving regular prenatal care and was not properly treated when she got sick. She ended up in an emergency room with double pneumonia that developed into septic shock, had a heart attack, a brain bleed and a stroke. The baby died and Jennifer died a few weeks later.
Midge Hough was heckled by anti-reform crowd members. "You can laugh at me, that's okay," she said, crying. "But I lost two people, and I know you think that's funny, that's okay."

Betsy ''Death Panel'' McCaughey Helped Philip Morris Derail Healthcare Reform
The person credited with inventing the "death panels" claim about health care reform worked with tobacco giant Phillip Morris to railroad health care reform in the Clinton administration, Rolling Stone magazine reports.
In an article in the magazine's October 1 issue, not yet available online, writer Tim Dickinson reveals that Phillip Morris "worked off-the-record with... writer Betsy McCaughey as part of the input to the three-part expose in The New Republic on what the Clinton plan means," Rolling Stone reports.

Susie Madrak, in her blog at Crooks and Liars, cites key parts of the Rolling Stone article:
[W]hat has not been reported until now is that McCaughey’s writing was influenced by Phillip Morris, the world’s largest tobacco company, as part of a secret campaign to scuttle Clinton’s health care reform. (The measure would have been funded by a huge increase in tobacco taxes.) In an internal company memo from March 1994, the tobacco giant detailed its strategy to derail Hillarycare through an alliance with conservative think tanks, front groups and media outlets. Integral to the company’s strategy, the memo observed, was an effort to “work on the development of favorable pieces” with “friendly contacts in the media.” The memo, prepared by a Phillip Morris executive, mentions only one author by name:
“Worked off-the-record with Manhattan [Editor's note: At the time, McCaughey was a fellow at the Manhattan Institute] and writer Betsy McCaughey as part of the input to the three-part expose in The New Republic on what the Clinton plan means to you. The first part detailed specifics of the plan.”
Betsy sure is looking out for all of us, isn't she?

Sarah Palin Resigning - Will Not Complete First Term As Governor
Caribou Barbie announced at a presser today that she is resigning as governor of Alaska, effective July 26. This is well before her term is over and though many speculate that she is simply prepping for a presidential run in 2012, I suspect something else is at play here. This whole things smells funny to me and I think it's out of character for her to quit the job early like this.
Don't be surprised if an "iceberg scandal" emerges in the next few days to sink her career. At least that's the buzz I'm reading via HuffPo DailyKos, and a few of those other DFH sites.
I must admit I was secretly hoping she would run in 2012 as the GOP nominee. But this could be more fun.
Stay tuned, kids!

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that Democrat Al Franken be certified as the winner of the state's long-running Senate race.
The high court rejected a legal challenge from Republican Norm Coleman, whose options for regaining the Senate seat are dwindling.
Justices said Franken is entitled to the election certificate he needs to assume office. With Franken and the usual backing of two independents, Democrats will have a big enough majority to overcome Republican filibusters.
Coleman accepted the loss shortly after the decision was announced, saying he had few regrets.
"The Supreme Court has made its decision and I will abide by the results," Coleman told reporters outside his St. Paul home.
This case was never about the law or making sure there was a fair election. This was about keeping Franken from being seated for as long as possible so the GOP could avoid a filibuster-proof majority.
Congratulations SENATOR Franken.

I really don't understand how bipartisanship is ever going to work when one of the parties is insane. Imagine trying to negotiate an agreement on dinner plans with your date, and you suggest Italian and she states her preference would be a meal of tire rims and anthrax. If you can figure out a way to split the difference there and find a meal you will both enjoy, you can probably figure out how bipartisanship is going to work the next few years.

Obama Staffers Horrified at Barbaric White House Computers
Obama staffers, previously residents of a magical technological world filled with IM, Facebook, unicorns and Macs, found a barbaric Stone Age when they entered the White House: No IM, scarce laptops, and dear Christ, Windows XP.
Other brutal conditions include dated computer software and rules banning outside e-mail accounts (don't want another Sarah Palin mess, do we?). Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, "It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari."
A travesty. How did previous White House staffs ever function???
